Mankind are governed more by their feelings than by reason

the trees surround me
the trees surround me,
tangled branches in falling snow
as I stumble and fall,
tripped by my thoughts,
what am I doing right now
that I'll regret hereafter,
as I've done so many times
in the getting from there to here?
what have I said today
that I'll hear in my night,
with my head in my hands
and my eyes pressed shut?
what foolishness will I commit,
tomorrow and the next,
like a slap bestowed blindly,
and to my stinging shame?
the trees surround me
as I stumble and fall.
