the stars listened

the stars listened tonight
to my speech
rehearsed just after sunset
while crossing the field
where you played
so freely,
so often,
where your laughter
in memory
teased the corners of my mouth
into a smile 
in the dark, 
where I spoke 
my guilty speech
to the stars.
